Life Science Industry

The expression “ Life Sciences ” encompasses the scientific disciplines dealing with the study and care of living organisms ( plants, animals and human beings). In our case, it is extended to also apply to the industrial macro-sector and the related production facilities.

What can we do

The "Life Sciences Industry” (hereinafter referred to, for the sake of simplicity asLife Sciences “, omitting the wordIndustry, which denotes the scientific research activities as related industrial applications) therefore also covers a very broad spectrum of activities, ranging from the Pharmaceutical to the Agri-food and Healthcare-Hospitals, etc. sectors.
These plants are all very different, in size and for other reasons, although they all require specific and sophisticated know how, implemented through the same set of steps: Feasibility studyBasic designExecutive designProcurement of the equipment and materials – and, last but not least – Construction – and Commissioning of the plant. However, it should be emphasised that the projects in this sector are characterised – for the achievement of the quality objectives and compliance with the project timeline and budget – by the need for a particularly close collaboration between Client and Contractor.
Following is an overview of some of the typical aspects and specific skills deployed by GST, with respect to each sector.

Pharmaceutical

GST can boast a longstanding experience and expertise in respect of both the synthesis of the active principles and the finalisation of the compounds, with solvents, inert substances and excipients, and the packaging as well. In this sector, in which the Design Process is based on the Client's specific experience, GST's role is to support each strategic decision, to develop the project technologically, in respect of the Executive Design, choice of the critical equipment, and assistance during the Construction and Commissioning stages. GST has also built up a considerable experience in the handling and storage of raw materials and finished products.

GST operates here as a Customer Oriented Company, i.e. in close collaboration with the Client, to maximise the synergy between the Client's know how and the plant experience, knowledge of Suppliers and Project Management skills which a Contractor may offer.

Finally, we must emphasise the Quality Assurance culture of GST, which is a particularly delicate feature of a pharmaceutical company, and which is inherent in our operational procedures. The Project Execution and Control Procedure is established at the launching of the project, through the preparation of a specific document, which covers both the design and execution stages, with a view to avoiding - during the implementation of the project - any repetitions or alterations due to misunderstandings as to the general objectives. The execution plan is also necessary to ensure the involvement, from the start, of the Client's Production Sector, in defining the User Requirements and General Specifications of the project.

Healthcare - Hospitals

In this sector, which is characterised by strict design and execution requirements, the experience built up by GST can be very useful to the Client for researching the control systems of the environmental conditions, the layout of the treatment rooms, surgical facilities and laboratories, with the ergonomic optimisation of the diagnostic and treatment machines.

In this field too, GST can operate according to various contractual arrangements, depending on the stage of the project and the Client's needs.

Agri-food

In the Agri-food sector GST can deliver a range of services, from Basic Design to Construction and Commissioning, for each stage of the production process, from cultivation to packaging. We must emphasise the experience built up by GST in the production of ethanol for the food industry and sugar refining.
